CZ16 - Hotels
The ball has gathered a bit of momentum. We will undoubtedly use the Shuttle to cross to France. It is the quickest and by August 2016, there ought to be no holdups with incursions into the tunnel by would-be migrants. Fingers crossed.
We have a rough plan.
Day 1 - late crossing and get on the road to Ghent/Gent in Belgium, stay at YH.
Day 2 - long day in the saddle to Nuremberg/Nurnberg
Day 3 - in the saddle for a shorter distance to Brno
Day 4/5 - local and GP. Maybe even get a chance to see a footie match if Brno are at home on Saturday.
Day 6 - long day in the saddle to Frankfurt/Main area.
Day 7 - longish day to Shuttle and home.
I have booked a hotel in Nuremberg on booking.com with the usual "pay later/free cancellation" system. After a long day in the saddle a hotel with parking in the centre, where there are bars and food, seems the best idea. It's not expensive but does charge to use the garage to park the bikes.
Bratwurst und bier.
Gent sorted as well. Travelling in August when everyone across Europe will be on holiday means that hotels and hostels can charge what they feel they can get away with.
Gent (Ghent in French) is a very popular destination and so after trawling the hotel websites I had a look on hihostels.com, the website of the International Youth Hostels Associations, and lo and behold, the hostel right in the centre of Gent was free, has a private room for two with breakfast for €53. So I have booked it. I had to pay a 10% deposit that is non refundable, but there's the gamble.
A quick email exchange with them confirms there is ample parking right outside the front door for the bikes. No doubt we'll both have some big locks and chains with us!
So that means that both overnight stops on the way out have been sorted. That should leave us with less to do once we leave for Brno. If we are staying with friends rather than arrive very late it seems better to arrive earlier. Mind you. It will still be a 300 mile day!
On the way back I have looked a few options and have booked a hotel in Aschaffenburg in Bavaria. A small town and this one has parking, wifi and breakfast. What more could anyone want? That will be a 400+ mile day!
